“Art and design is not just a subject to learn, but an activity that you can practise; with your hands, your eyes, your whole personality”
Quentin Blake
Intent
The intent of our Art and Design curriculum at St George’s Primary school is to provide all pupils with high-quality art and design lessons which engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. We will provide our pupils with art and design experiences that will inspire and are rich and varied, fulfilling, enjoyable and accessible for all. Pupils will have the opportunity to express their thoughts and ideas within a range of art forms to enable pupils to become creative, reflective, critical, responsive and appreciative. Lessons will encourage children to participate actively, taking risks by trialling different possibilities to communicate meaning to different audiences.
Pupils have regular opportunities to respond to the work of artists whilst working as artists themselves to develop an appreciation of aesthetics and offer them insights into different viewpoints, cultures and identities. At St George’s our Art and Design lessons are developed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about the rich heritage and culture of the British Isles and beyond.
About our Scheme of Work
We use a Primary Art and design scheme of work from Kapow aims that to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. Our scheme is written by experts in their field and designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about the rich heritage and culture of the British Isles and beyond.
Kapow Primary’s Art and design scheme of work supports pupils to meet the National curriculum end of key stage attainment targets and has been written to fully cover the National Society for Education in Art and Design’s progression competencies.
