At St George’s Primary School we recognise the importance of PE and the role that it has to play in promoting long term, healthy lifestyles.
Intent
The intent of the PE curriculum is shaped by key skills and outcomes set out in the national curriculum, as well as an understanding of the school’s unique context. This includes considering pupil demographics, school values, and links with local clubs and community opportunities. A clear statement of aims, supported by a curriculum map and progression documents, outlines how pupils will develop skills over time. Staff and pupil voice questionnaires, along with the school’s PE policy, further inform and refine the overarching vision for what the curriculum seeks to achieve.
Implementation is supported by a structured scheme of work, progressive lesson plans, and reliable assessment tools. Resources such as pupil self-assessment sheets, key learning and vocabulary materials, and video evidence help guide teaching and track progress. Staff development is encouraged through CPD opportunities, rules cards, glossaries, and collaborative practices such as team teaching. Learning walks, observations, conversations, and ongoing staff and pupil voice feedback all contribute to ensuring that the curriculum is delivered consistently and effectively across the school.
The impact of the PE curriculum is measured through a range of evidence, including staff and pupil voice questionnaires, assessments, and observations of pupils in action. Video evidence, pupil attitudes toward PE, and participation in extracurricular activities provide insight into levels of engagement and enjoyment. The information gathered helps identify pupils’ next steps in learning and supports transition to the next stage of education. Reporting tools and collected evidence together demonstrate how effectively the curriculum has supported pupils’ development and overall progress in PE.
Key Concepts thread throughout the Curriculum.
Our PE lessons encourage children to compete against themselves and others whilst being challenged to improve their physical, social, emotional and thinking skills. These skills are embedded in the heart of our planning.
Our objectives in the teaching of PE align with the National Curriculum in that we aim to ensure all pupils: Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
